Philips Park Update – May 2021

Despite the variable weather we have been experiencing the growing season is well under way both inside and outside at Philips Park. In the orchard we have a nice show of bluebells and the trees are covered with blossom so
hopefully we won’t have any late hard frosts.

Over the last year we have increased the number of regular volunteers. They have been very busy, preparing, repairing, tidying and planting. Outside we have planted potatoes, onions, wild flowers and have just begun with some brassicas. Inside the new polytunnel, we have raised from seed, lettuce, chard, cabbage, cauliflower, chillies, tomatoes, Brussel sprouts, and nasturtiums. These are available to buy from us on a Saturday morning between 10am and 12pm.

Man gardening

This year for the first time we have had frog spawn in our pond. So, we are looking forward to them helping keep down the pests. We now have 5 bee hives on site so just be aware if you are visiting to keep to the paths and not to get to near the hives. Hopefully we will have even more honey this year than last year.

Our new purpose built garden, behind the poly tunnel, part funded by the National Lottery, is now nearing completion. The main structures have been completed, we just need to complete the final touches and then we all will be able to enjoy a tranquil spot to relax.

Over the next few weeks we will be planting up the remaining raised beds. We will continue with succession planting so we will have plants ready to buy and use. Our attention will also turn to developing the forest garden section behind he Barn and the herb / fruit garden behind the old night club. So plenty of work still to do, if you would like to join us or just come and enjoy the Park!
